The rumor, circulating since about 2004:
REMEMBER: Cell Phone Numbers Go Public this month.
REMINDER..... all cell phone numbers are being released to telemarketing companies and you will start to receive sales calls.
.... YOU WILL BE CHARGED FOR THESE CALLS
To prevent this, call the following number from your cell phone: 888-382-1222.
It is the National DO NOT CALL list. It will only take a minute of your time.. It blocks your number for five (5) years. You must call from the cell phone number you want to have blocked. You cannot call from a different phone number.
HELP OTHERS BY PASSING THIS ON ... It takes about 20 seconds.
The truth :
888-382-1222 is actually the National Do Not Call Registry phone number. You may add your cell phone to the Do Not Call list, but you will not be bombarded with telemarketing calls if you don't. Perhaps this is an attempt to flood the government with calls, or just plain paranoia.
From Snopes.com:
Claim: Cell phone users must register their numbers with the national "Do Not Call" directory by a given deadline to prevent their cell phone numbers from being released to telemarketers.
FALSE
From UrbanLegends.com:
Forwarded email warns that a directory of cell phone numbers will soon be published and urges users to dial 888-382-1222 and enter their cell phone numbers on the federal Do Not Call Registry to prevent unsolicited calls from telemarketers.
