A flip book of original art by NYC comics artist Andrea L. Peterson. On the last page, a "tell a friend" form sends an invitation with a link to the page and an image of the book's front cover, sent via php mail for a seamless experience.

I was contracted to write an article about PHP and SEO. When I submitted it, I was informed that I was a ghost writer and my name would not appear on the article (another Craigslist story). I decided to give up the credit and take the money. The article has been widely distributed and syndicated on the web.

This is a demo for a gig I didn't get - redesigning the Universal Gateway web site. Hooked up through Craigslist, didn't seem quite on the up-and-up from the beginning. I was never paid for this work. Anyway, I enjoyed creating the flash header in a cinematic "space opera" style, in b&w (kinda retro). I found the real space images on the NASA web site.

I tried out a lot of javascripts from libraries, and modded many with added features, better style, or just plain better function. I prefer to use off-the-shelf open source code as a starting point, it saves time (and saves money for my clients). However, I developed ideas for functions that weren't in any script libraries, so I had to cook them from scratch. I collected a few of these original and unusual javascript widgets, doodads, and apps at jsgenie Scripts.

Formmail Redirect Screenshot

I didn't like the confirmation page produced by cgi - it was ugly, static, and sometimes it revealed too much sensitive info about data collection. Early on (circa 1998) most cgi scripts didn't even generate a link back to the page where the form was submitted. The user just stared at the screen, wondering what to do next - the more savvy ones found the browser back button. So I developed this little helper, triggered when the form is submitted.

I started developing a popup script with a link back to the opening page around 1998. It has gone through several stages of refinements. At first, it opened an html web page in the little popup window, but as server speeds improved, the popup web page loaded too late to capture the opener's address. To cure this, the MR function opens the popup and writes the html code immediately into the popup, so the link back is accurate.

I set up Virtual Varmints in 1998 to sell virtual pet games (remember tamagotchi?) I didn't think people were comfortable with online payments yet (the web was still in toddlerdom) so I shipped orders COD. There was a steady supply of new and interesting vpet products available in the wholesale district in Manhattan just south of Herald Square. The VV web site attracted a manufacturer in Taiwan who made me his US rep for "Wedding Pets" (you connect them with plugs and one has a baby - no kidding).

I set up my first web page at GeoCities in 1996. Even then, I was interested in dynamic web pages, and I used meta http refresh to load a transitional page, and then my resume.  Since then, my web site there has grown to the limit for free hosting (15 mb), and I decided to upgrade netsperience to a web host with php and mysql as well as other amenities not available at GeoCities free hosting (well, you get what you pay for).
